"The secondary market for Italian wine: past, present and future"
This presentation will provide a summary of the price performance of leading Italian wines on the secondary market over the past five years, along with what factors affect prices (e.g. Sassicaia ‘15 jumped in price after being named Wine Spectator’s wine of the year in 2018). James will discuss current market trends: Buyers are looking to regions outside of Bordeaux and Burgundy for value, such as Italy. Top brands from the region offer exceptional quality but at a lower entry point than the top brands in other regions. These trends are affecting the performance of Italian wines in the secondary market. For example, year-to-date, Italy has been the best performing sub-index of the Liv-ex 1000 index (which tracks the price performance of the top 1000 global brands). The presentation concludes by addressing the question of ‘what the future holds for Italian wines and their prices?’ It provides key takeaways for how this information can help wine producers and other players to price, source and sell wine smarter.
