CEO of Donnafugata
Antonio Rallo, born in 1967, represents the fifth generation of a Sicilian family with 160 years of experience in quality wine. He graduated in Agricultural Sciences with highest marks from the University of Palermo. Before devoting himself completely to the family business, in which he has been involved since he was very young, he moved to Germany to improve his knowledge in a traditionally strategic market for Italian wine. Back to the island, he followed his lifelong passion, the vineyard and wine. He married Barbara Pezzano with whom he also shared countless trips and business experiences. Today Antonio Rallo, together with his sister José, is CEO and co-owner of Donnafugata, the company founded by his parents Giacomo and Gabriella. A winemaker of great passion and technical expertise, Antonio Rallo oversees the production of Donnafugata, which has historic cellars in Marsala and estates with over 400 hectares of vineyards in western Sicily (Contessa Entellina and Pantelleria), and in eastern Sicily (Vittoria and Mount Etna). Grown up among vineyards and wineries, Antonio Rallo has a great love for the territory and promotes with a strategic vision of Sicilian wine: the growth of the system through an inclusive path of the wine operators of the island. From 2011 to 2014 he was president of Assovini Sicilia, the association that brings together the major Sicilian producers. In June 2012 he contributed to the establishment of the Consorzio Vini Sicilia DOC, an instrument for promotion and territorial cohesion. Also in 2012 he was elected president of the Consortium and today has over 8,300 winegrowers. In 2011 he joined the Council of Unione Italiana Vini – Confederazione Italiana della Vite e del Vino, the main national association of companies in the sector, of which he was president between 2016 and 2017. Among the various awards and appointments there are also those of “Chevalier du Tastevin” of Burgundy since 1999 and “Academic of Georgofili” since 2014.
"The Wine Observatory by Unione Italiana Vini: data sharing for the Italian wine industry"
The new Wine Observatory platform from Unione Italiana Vini (UIV) will present, through a single web portal, worldwide wine trade data including production, stock, and bulk wine prices. The tool will include (thanks to a partnership with the Italian “consorzi di tutela”) a system for monitoring the performance of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) wines both in the Italian market and overseas. This session will be the the first ever unveiling of the functional platform and will feature commentary from the entrepreneurs and consortia who helped make the project possible.
